Asheville Neighborhoods

Karsten Harries, a distinguished professor of architecture at Yale University wrote, “What need was there in paradise for a house? Were Adam and Eve not well provided for in that walled garden? Only the Fall, which cast them out of paradise and forced them to toil on cursed ground, brought with it the necessity of building. Now human work had to remedy the deficiency of a world that transgression had rendered inhospitable, wresting from it a place that would... in some measure make up for what had been lost.” (The Ethical Function of Architecture, MIT Press 1997)

Harries is referring I think to what we strive for in making a house a home - some sort of re-connection with a more perfect past, a re-connection with the divine. Perhaps this is what I seek in photographing houses and yards. Beauty can, it seems to me, help one feel a connection with the divine, and beauty comes in many forms -- especially when the light is just right....
