Hickory Nut Gap Farm

"Hickory Nut Gap Farm", in Fairview, NC, was at one time a “Drover's Stand” on the Buncombe Turnpike, the first road through this part of the Appalachians, along which animals of many kinds were driven to coastal markets. In 1916 James and Elizabeth McClure moved here from Illinois in search of a more healthful atmosphere for Mr. McClure, a minister. Mr. McClure gave back to the community a life of service, which included most prominently the formation and direction of the Farmers Federation, a marketing and educational cooperative which transformed the local farming economy. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren are active leaders in the community to this day, where they continue amid contemporary challenges to operate the farm, and carry on its legacy.

The beauty of Hickory Nut Gap is a hopeful reminder of how the experience of life can be deepened and redeemed when we sink deep roots in our communities, our families, and our homes. Beauty at Hickory Nut Gap is an expression of more than just thoughtful design and lovely surroundings – it is the result of the way contemporary life is layered upon the rich history of the place. Paintings and books, morning-circle at summer camp, lunch makings on the kitchen counter, new lambs in the barn, toys in the yard – all of these things are evidence of the deep community, spiritual, and family roots laid down at Hickory Nut Gap for over four generations now.
